The cousins are out again! Becky Andrews Hyder and Sarah
Christopher enjoyed a delightful lunch at The Palmetto Café in the Charleston
Place Hotel. The Hyders were in Charleston to support the Davidson basketball
team as they played The College of Charleston and The Citadel. They were not
nice to our local boys. They “cleaned our clocks!” All jests aside, Davidson has a great
basketball team. Since the CofC Cougars are moving to the Colonial Athletic
Association next year, we won’t be playing them, but there are still Citadel
games to use as an opportunity to see Becky.
There is a story that when Granddaddy Andrews moved his family
to Davidson because of his work with the railroad, the first Sunday the family
headed to church (and I’m not sure which one). Granddaddy, Grandmother and the
children (not sure how many at that time) marched in and sat down. It turns out that, unbeknownst to them, they
were in the president of Davidson College’s usual pew. Apparently he was very gracious and sat
somewhere else. After the service he came up and introduced himself to this new
family and welcomed them to Davidson. Becky says she never heard this story
before, and I am wondering if any of you have. Mother told it to me many times.
Becky also said Uncle Bill was born in Davidson.
I love picking up all these little tidbits of history!
Love to you all!
Sarah
